What is a paywall in app design?

A paywall is the screen (or sequence of screens) where an app asks the user to subscribe, purchase, or upgrade to access premium features. The best paywalls feel like a natural extension of value delivery — not a barrier.

What apps have the best paywall designs?

Widely-studied examples include Calm, Headspace, Duolingo Super, Notion Plus, Strava Subscription, Streaks (one-time IAP), Bevel, and Apple Fitness+. Each demonstrates a different paywall archetype — value-first, social proof, feature-gate, or trial-led. Browse paywall examples on Gummble.

When should an app show its paywall?

Common triggers include a clearly demonstrated value moment, a free-tier limit, or an attempt to use a paid feature. Test trigger timing by source and cohort; no placement is universally highest-converting.

Should I offer a free trial or freemium?

A trial exposes the full product for a bounded period; freemium offers ongoing limited use. Choose based on time-to-value, marginal cost, habit formation, and support load, then compare paid conversion, retention, and refunds in your own data.

How do I increase paywall conversion?

Start with clear value, transparent billing terms, accessible plan comparison, and trustworthy proof. Test trigger, plan order, copy, and imagery independently and evaluate both conversion and post-purchase quality.

What is the difference between a paywall and a pricing page?

A paywall is in-app, shown to existing users who have experienced the product. A pricing page is on the marketing site, shown to prospects who have not used the product yet. Pricing pages need to do more education work; paywalls can lean on demonstrated value.

Should I use Apple's StoreKit paywall views?

StoreKit views can reduce custom purchase-state work and provide platform-native subscription controls. Choose native or custom presentation based on product needs, and verify the current App Store requirements before submission.

How to design a paywall that converts

Paywall changes can affect purchase rate, retention, refunds, and support load at the same time. Instrument the full funnel and isolate one variable per experiment. Here is an evidence-oriented process for 2026:

Step 1.Decide the trigger — time, usage, or feature gate

Choose a trigger that matches the product journey: time-based, usage-based, or a feature gate. Instrument the trigger and compare downstream conversion, retention, and refund behavior by cohort.

Step 2.Lead with value, not features

The top of the paywall should answer 'what can I do now that I couldn't before?' in one sentence with one image. List features as supporting proof — never as the headline.

Step 3.Make plan comparison explicit

If one plan is recommended, explain the selection rule and keep every price and billing period visible. Test plan order and monthly-equivalent framing separately; do not assume one default wins for every audience.

Step 4.Add verifiable proof above the CTA

Use substantiated user counts, attributed review snippets, App Store ratings, or permissioned testimonials near the upgrade button. Never invent counts or endorsements; measure the effect with your own experiment.

Step 5.Make the trial offer crystal clear

If you offer a free trial, show its length, what charges and when, renewal terms, and how to cancel. Check the current store rules for each platform before release.

Step 6.Design the dismiss state intentionally

Many users will not convert on first view. The dismiss state (Maybe later / X button) should set up the next paywall trigger — not punish users for not paying. Consider showing a discounted offer on second view.

Step 7.Use Apple's StoreKit 2 paywall UI when on iOS

Apple's StoreKit 2 paywall views render natively, support family sharing, and handle restore-purchase / receipts automatically. Use them as the base layer and add brand polish on top — do not roll your own from scratch.

Step 8.Test pricing, copy, and order separately

Run isolated experiments for price point, plan order, CTA copy, imagery, and proof placement. Keep a holdout and report confidence intervals so one change can be attributed at a time.
